Embracing the outdoors as a family

Parents and children nowadays spend more time in front of the TV and computer. If this drags on, it can result in a sedentary lifestyle, and even obesity. Although these may be your favourite family pastimes, don’t abandon the outdoors totally. Fresh air, green scenes, sounds of nature like chirping, gurgling waterfalls are great remedies for the body, mind and soul.

Picnic
It can be by the lake, at the beach or even in your own garden! Once again, you can get the kids to help out…like putting the sandwiches, Dutch Lady UHT milk, paper cup and plates into the basket. When you’re at the picnic site, ask them what they see and hear. This helps to build their sense of awareness and develop their observation skills.

Cookout
You could start with collecting dry sticks with your child. Then make a trip to the beach and fish. Be sure to pack convenient food like eggs and baked beans (just in case you don’t get lucky). Pick a Y-shaped stick and plant it into the ground, upright. Lay all the other sticks so that they lean against the Y-shaped stick. Use matches or a lighter to start a fire. Fry the fish, eggs or beans in the pan for a unusual outdoor meal.

Canopy walk
Green is in. And what better way to experience it than taking a walk in the woods on a bridge suspended in air! If you know the names of the trees you see and animal sounds you hear, point them out to your children. It will be an educational trip for them.

Train ride
Instead of going to the playground or shopping mall, take a train ride with your children for a different sense of adventure. Point out the various landmarks like the mosque, court building, river, museum, art gallery and so on. Most children love train rides as they will discover things that they have never seen before.

Carnivals

The funfair or any carnival promises an endless day of fun for the whole family. Let them try out different games, sample different foods and experience different things. An outing like this will encourage them to be adventurous, outgoing and sociable.
